Bavarian Pretzel
Brezeln
Travelling to the Alps, you will enjoy the lovely mountainscape, nice people and of course the lovely food. In this section of our MiaDeRoca-Magazine we will present you typical local recipies. Recipes for things to drink and things to eat, a wide variety of dishes with meat, with vegetabels and the so called "Mehlspeisen". "Mehlspweisen" are dishes with flour, seet meals like the "Kaiserschmarrn", "Palatschinken" oder "Topfenknödel".
You won't be able to get all the traditional ingredients everywhere, but in cases the products are rare, we will mention some alternatives. And if you still doubt, just drop us a line, we will try to help you to get some Alpine savour to your lunch or dinner.

Glühwein

For the grown-ups to warm your cold fingers with a cup of Glühwein is part of the christmas mood, be it on a christmas market or a get-togehter with friends and family for example for Nikolaus' Day on December 6th.
ice cold, freezing chain
Before you freeze to ice, better warm yourself from the inside with alpine spiced hot wine: Glühwein
While spaniards think it is a form of hot Sangria, Anglo-Saxons refer to it as mulled wine or claret, yet it is Glühwein! The word decends from "glühen" what means to glow, to smoulder and "wein" what means wine.

Ingredients: (serves 4)
500ml red wine
60g/2oz sugar
1 cinnamon stick
4 cloves

Preparation:
1. Put the wine in a saucepan with the sugar and the spices.
2. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Leave a few minutes warming to allow the spices to add their flavors.
3. Taste it and know you can behave as you like: if it is to strong ad some water or apple juice. If you are more the juicy and fruity person you can add apples, slices of oranges, raisins and nuts.
4. Strain into cups or heatproof glasses. Serve with christmas cookies, Lebkuchen or with Apfelradeln

Usually Glühwein is made with red wine, you can use white wine as well. If you prefer a drink with less alcohol you can try Glühmost, a hot and spiced must of apples and pears.
