On the 1st of September meteorologically we have the start of autumn / fall – the changing of seasons. We love the ripening of the fruits, sun which does not burn that hot anymore, cooler days to drink tea and burn some logs and the yellow, orange and red leaves on the trees and the start of Alweibersommer.
In Salzburg we experience some more highlights in September. Of course, for many kids and youngster school starts mid September after 9 long weeks of summer break. On the 24th of September it is Saint Rupert. As Saint Rupert is the founder of Salzburg there is a big fair around this date in the city centre. For kids you can find several traditional fair ground attractions, some roasted almonds, apple coated in candy, Lebkuchen hearts and several more sweets, of course there are beer tents and you can try the first Sturm of the season. Sturm is early wine- still very sweet, still fermenting and with bubbles.
In other regions of the Alps, September is awaited with glee: Oktoberfest starts in Munich the 17th of September and lasts until October 3rd. It is mainly a Septemberfest this big party with Dirndl, Lederhosen and beer. You can find great accessories for Oktoberfest at the MiaDeRoca Shop.
What we especially enjoy in September is long walks and hiking, we visit waterfalls, mountains and other nature attractions in the region of Salzburg. The photo we chose for this calendar sheet of September is taken near a small waterfall close to the city of Salzburg, it is our fairy forest, enchanted, calm and beautiful.
