Törggelen
Traditionally Törggelen only takes place in the South Tyrol, Italy: Accompanied by "Sußer" and "Nuier" you get salted meat, sausages, kraut and dumplings and as a desert "Keschtn". For all Non-South Tyrolean it should be clear that Törggelen is about a delicious meal, but exactly what and for what reason?
Törggelen takes place from mid-October and lasts until mid-November or the end of November, so until shortly before the Christmas period. For this time period it could be a kind of Thanksgiving, which is not so wrong. South Tyrol is a wonderful wine region and the autumn is the time of the first young Wine-ferments and wines and that is is named "Sußer" and "Nuier." "Suße" is comparable to " Federweisser" (in Germany) or "Sturm" (in Austria), a half fermented sweet grape juice, which is arther dangerous drink, as it tastes more of lemonade, which makes some people forget its alcohol. The cloudy beverage ist in the process of fermenting, in between must and wine, it is slightly sparkling. The "Nuie" on the other hand, is the new wine, the " vin nouveau". The first tasting already gives a hint of how the wine will develop.
Autumn Leaves
And there we are at the origin of Törggelen - the name derives from wine production and the first Törggelen was mere wine tasting. When tasting alcohol a proper basis is of need, and so the wine tasting supplemented by a food testing, and the whole thingin ended up being a nice event. Meanwhile, Törggelen is so popular that many South Tyrolean, Tyrolian and tourists like celebrating this tradition. What about "Keschtn"? That is the term for sweet chestnuts, as dessert particularly excellent accompanied with a "Sußer". In a Törggele-party there are not only culinary delights, but music making, singing and dancing as well. And South Tyrol is, beside the Törggelen, worth a visit during autumn, as the seasonal change is most beautiful to watch in a rural landscape: deciduous trees with autumn foliage , dark cliffs andare yellow coloured vines.
