Christmas Markets, Salzburg
Christmas market, Christkindlmarkt or Christkindlesmarkt, "Adventmarkt": at the end of November, at the latest on the first Advent (4 Sundays before Christmas) markets open in many cities and villages in Central Europe. Stands of timber with arts and handcrafts, crafts, Christmas decorations, toys, Glühwein (mulled wine), tea and snacks. For many a visit to the Christmas market is the best thing to turn on the Christmas mood.
In this article we introduce to you a couple of markets in the city of Salzburg, Austria, and around Salzburg. But caution to everyone who is frightened easily:until December 6th next to the Sankt Nikolaus (Santa Claus) one or the other Krampus or Percht can be viewed at the Christmas market.
- Domplatz (cathedral's square)
The traditional Christmas market in Salzburg is the one at the Domplatz in the center of the medieval city center (Altstadt). 500 years ago this market opened for the first time and has since then continued with interruptions. The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt in Cathedral Square is the hugest market in Salzburg and attracts a million visitors a year. Especially on weekends there are evening performances by choirs and brass instrumentalists.

- St. Leonhard close to Grödig
In the vicinity of Salzburg, at the Bavarian border lies the small village of St. Leonhard. The Christmas market is at the weekend, from Saturday afternoon to Sunday from 1.00 to 19.00 open. In the housees on the market, there are mainly handicrafts and traditional wooden toys for sale, the proceeds of the market will be donated annually.
- Guggenthal
At the foot of the mountain Gaisberg, lies the village church and the village inn of Guggenthal. On the small square in front of the church around a stately old tree are small market stands. This Christmas market is very traditional, shows products from local artisans and craftspeople. On Guggenthaler Advent market traditional lokal folk music (Volksmusic) with brass and singers of the vicinity.Opened on weekends from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Hellbrunn
A wonderful background for thoughtful Christmas mood is the castle Hellbrunn in the south of Salzburg. The Hellbrunner Adventzauber (magic of Advent) offers not only wonderful idyllic scenery, but also real reindeer to pet, the program is music with alphorns, trumpets, zither, and a storyteller.
- Gut Aiderbichl
On Gut Aiderbichl Michael Aufhauser runs a farm with rescued animals. At the end of November, the doors of the Advent market open, which lasts until January 6, the day of the three kings. The stands are in a big hall, you can visit the animals and see one or the other celebrity.
